Why Do I Need an Emissions Test?

Vehicle emissions testing is required by law as part of the Clean Air Act. The purpose of the Clean Air Act is to limit the amount of smog that enters the environment by requiring emissions tests in populated areas of the country.

In Georgia, motorists in the Atlanta Metro Area must undergo the state emissions test, also known as a smog test, as part of their responsibility to care for the air and environment.

Georgia's Clean Air Force oversees state emissions testing in conjunction with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Georgia Emissions Inspection Requirements

If your vehicle is a 1990 – 2011 model year gasoline-powered car or light-duty truck (8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or less) registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding or Rockdale County, it must be emissions tested.

The three most recent model year vehicles are exempt from emissions testing each year.

Additionally, vehicles that are 25 model years or older are exempt from emissions testing.

At the end of an emissions test at our facility, one of our emissions technicians will present you with certificate that indicates the result of your emissions test.

What if My Vehicle Fails the Emissions Test?

Well-maintained vehicles usually pass the emissions test first time unless there is a component failure that has not been repaired or manufacturer’s defect. Standards have been set to take into consideration the age of your vehicle as well as the emissions control components available at the time your vehicle was manufactured. If your car does fail, it must be repaired and retested.

You will receive one free retest if you return to the original inspection station within 30 calendar days of your initial inspection (Note: 30 days includes the date and the time of your initial inspection).

Keep Georgia a clean and healthy state. Each day, these efforts help our world make every mile count, while keeping pollution out of the air we breathe. Pay attention to engine performance and stay on top of vehicle maintenance.
